📱 Proton Mail Android App – Technical Review & Personal Opinion

If you're looking for a secure alternative to Gmail on your Android phone, Proton Mail might just be the best option. Here's a full review, with features, pros, cons, and my own experiecnce as a dev specialized in Android apps.

🧾 What is Proton Mail?

Proton Mail is a secure, open-source email app built for privacy and encryption. It was developed by Proton AG, based in Switzerland – a country known for its strong privacy laws. The app focuses on end-to-end encryption, meaning not even Proton itself can read your emails.

Top Features

  1. End-to-End Encryption
All your emails are encrypted before they leave your device and can only be read by the recipient. Even Proton can’t see the content.

  2. Zero-Access Architechture
Emails are stored in a way that no one – not even the developers – can decrypt them.

  3. Password-Protected Emails
You can send emails to non-Proton users with a password that they need to open the message.

  4. Self-Destructing Emails
Set your emails to automatically delete after a certain time. Perfect for sensitive info.

  5. Open Source & Based on PGP
The app uses trusted encryption libraries like AES, RSA and OpenPGP. Anyone can audit the code.

  6. Modern UI & Dark Mode
The design is slick, clean, and easy to use. Supports dark theme too.

  7. Integrated with Proton Calendar
Easily switch between your inbox and encrypted calendar from the same place.

  8. Secure Access with PIN or Fingerprint
Add an extra layer of security by locking the app itself.

  9. Push Notifications via FCM
You get real-time alerts for new mail through Firebase Cloud Messaging.

  10. Labels, Folders, and Filters
Helps you stay organized. More options available in the paid version.

Pros

  • High-level security and privacy

  • Clean and intuitive interface

  • Integrated with other Proton services

  • No ads or trackers

  • Free to use with core features

⚠️ Cons

  • Missing Conversation View
Some users want Gmail-style email threading, which isn't working perfectly yet.

  • No Rich HTML Replies
Replies are plain text only. Formatting is very limited.

  • Slow Sync or Notifications
Sometimes notifications are delayed or emails don’t sync immediatly.

  • Depends on Google Services for Notifications
If you're on a de-Googled device, push notifications may not work.

  • UI Bugs & Lag
There are occasional performance glitches, especially on older devices or heavy mailboxes.

🧠 My Personal Opinion

As Abderezak , an Android apps developer, I strongly recommend Proton Mail. It’s one of the very few apps that truly respects your privacy.

Yes, it’s not perfect – missing some UX stuff like threaded emails or rich reply formatting – but the encryption and commitment to open source make it totally worth it.

Final Thoughts:
If you value privacy and want a Gmail alternative, Proton Mail is a must-have. The app is being updated all the time, and every release gets better.
